“I am not a Frankenstein. I’m a Fronkensteen.”
A comedy series based on Mel Brooks‘ classic 1974 film Young Frankenstein is nearing a pilot order at FX, according to a report on Deadline.
Brooks reportedly approved the project, titled Very Young Frankenstein, and will serve as an executive producer alongside three creatives from FX’s What We Do in the Shadows: Stefani Robinson, who will be the writer and showrunner; Taika Waititi, set to direct the pilot; and Garrett Basch. Additional executive producers include Brooks’ producing partner Kevin Salter (known for History of the World, Part 2 and Spaceballs 2) and Michael Gruskoff, who produced Young Frankenstein. The project is being developed by 20th Television.
Released on December 15, 1974, Young Frankenstein was directed by Mel Brooks and follows Dr. Frederick Frankenstein as he learns that he has inherited his infamous grandfather’s estate in Transylvania. Upon arriving at the castle, Dr. Frankenstein soon begins to recreate his grandfather’s experiments. Hilarity ensues.
The film, which starred Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman, Teri Garr, Kenneth Mars, and Madeline Kahn, would go on to earn $86.2 million at the box office against a budget of $2.78 million.
