This is the 20-year anniversary of Pan’s Labyrinth and the cast and creators came to San Diego Comic-Con to celebrate and promote a special version of the film. We learned in the panel that this film will be released in theaters in 4k 3D on October 9, 2026. Guillermo Del Toro proudly discussed doing the conversion himself to 3D without using AI. He made his opinion on the matter with his statement of “absolutely no g*d**mn AI!” Del Toro noted the process would have been faster with AI but stated you can do it quick or you could do it good and he wanted it to be good. The rerelease the film will have upgraded music and sound. Del Toro also stated that he wants the movie to have a second life because it is still relevant today. And for his contributions to storytelling, Comic-Con presented him with an Inkpot Award. Awarded annually at the convention, this award is given for notable achievement in the arts.
The panel audience was treated to a sneak peek of the documentary of the making of the movie. And later that evening at an offsite event, fans and guests gathered to hear more about the project from Del Toro and watch a couple of clips of the movie in 3D. If the clips are any indication of the beauty of this conversion, the film will be a beautiful spectacle that fans will definitely want to see in a theater.
