“They’re doing their part. Are you?”
A new Starship Troopers film is happening at Sony, with District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp writing and directing, according to a report on Deadline. The new movie will go back to the 1959 source material by Robert A. Heinlein and not be based on the 1997 Paul Verhoeven movie.
Blomkamp seems to be a natural fit to take on the project as he delivered science fiction hits such as District 9, Elysium, and Chappie.
Written by Robert A. Heinlein and published on November 5, 1959, Starship Troopers would go on to win the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1960. The book, which is set 700 years in the future, explores themes of duty, citizenship, and the role of the military in society, arguing that full citizenship, including the right to vote, should be earned through service, often military service, to the Terran Federation.
Directed by Paul Verhoeven, the Starship Troopers film premiered on November 7, 1997, and starred Casper Van Dien, Dina Meyer, Denise Richards, Jake Busey, Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Muldoon and Michael Ironside. The film took home $121 million at the box office against an estimated budget of $110 million.
