Horror icon Lin Shaye was at WonderCon to tell horror fan about the new movie Scared to Death. Joined by writer/director Paul Boyd and others from the cast and crew, fans were treated to clips from the movie, behind-the-scenes videos, and tales from the set. Shaye noted that Boyd initially had wanted her to play the role of the psychic. She suggested to Boyd that she play the executive in the movie and specifically play the part as a less feminine character. Boyd agreed and swapped roles with Shaye and Bill Moseley and now he is the psychic in this film. Boyd noted how well it worked to have them both off-type. Boyd said that while he had a script, the actors were allowed to do a lot of improvisation. Shaye mostly wrote her own dialog, with director approval.
Moseley was not at the panel, but visual effects pro J. Alan Scott did bring him along, or his head, at any rate, to the delight of the attendees. He told us about how Moseley was scanned digitally and molded to get the head right. He noted that the puppet and the actor need to match, mentioning that “you make a puppet that looks like an actor, but you also have to make the actor look like the puppet.” They also had to make sure it could roll on the floor, and a trick was to roll it in reverse. Actress Victoria Konefal said working with the head was her favorite part of filming.
Kurt Deimer plays the role of The Grog, a former horror icon in the film. Deimer is also a musician and wrote the theme song to the movie. The panel also discussed the infamous, and possibly haunted, house the movie was filmed in. The movie was shot in a house built in 1886 in Alta Dena, California. Everything was filmed in 22 days. Despite being in the 2025 fire area, the house survived. Finally, Boyd let the fans know his next film is called Relapse and several of the cast from this film will be appearing in that film, as well.
Scared to Death will be available for streaming on May 5, 2026.
