The film–slated to open in theaters Jan. 28, 2022 (after a long delay due to the continuing pandemic)–begs the question: Is Dr. Michael Morbius here to save the world…or destroy it?
Morbius–directed by Daniel Espinosa from a screenplay by Matt Sazama, Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and Burk Sharpless–follows the “enigmatic antihero, who is dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and who is determined to save others suffering his same fate,” according to the official synopsis. When Morbius gambles on a dangerous cure, “what at first appears to be a radical success reveals itself to be a remedy potentially worse than the disease.”
The PG-13 movie stars Oscar winner Jared Leto in the titular role, alongside Jared Harris as Morbius’ mentor, Tyrese Gibson as an FBI agent trying to hunt him down, Adria Arjona as Morbius’ fiancée Martine Bancroft, Matt Smith as Loxias Crown and Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes (the high-flying Vulture from the Spider-Man Universe).
The Marvel Comics Morbius character–created by editor/writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane–first appeared in The Amazing Spider–Man No. 101 (1971), and later starred in the black-and-white Vampire Tales from 1973-1975.
