William Brent Bell: A Third ‘Orphan’ Entry In The Works

by Thomas Tuna

There are more kills in the offing.

The bizarre story of Esther–chronicled in Orphan and its prequel Orphan: First Kill–will continue in a third film, according to William Brent Bell, the man who helmed the 2022 prequel.

Bell–in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter–dropped the news, saying, “We’re developing a third one now. The franchise’s rule book has been opened up to where anything is possible. Knowing where we are in the process already, I’m extremely excited about the twists and turns we have in store.”

No plot details, casting choices or production schedules have yet been announced, so stay tuned for more revelations.

First Kill turns back the clock from the ending of the original 2009 film, and focuses on the story of Esther’s first victim. Esther–whose real name in Leena Klammer–is again played by Isabelle Fuhrman.

The prequel follows Leena as she impersonates Esther Mauerova, the missing daughter of Katie (Julia Stiles) and Richard (Rossif Sutherland). Leena/Esther begins to “sow discord between the two, as Katie grows suspicious of the child–and the couple soon discovers Leena’s murderous history. As they become a threat to her, Leena commits her ‘first kill’.”

The original Orphan–directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson–stars Vera Farmiga and Peter Sarsgaard, along with Fuhrman. A box office success, the film earned $79 million worldwide on a $20-million budget.
