Hollywood leading man Val Kilmer has died. His daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, confirmed to the New York Times that the actor had passed away after battling pneumonia. He was 65.
While his most famous roles were outside of the horror genre, Kilmer made an impact in the horror realm in films such as The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Red Planet, and Moscow Zero.
Kilmer got his start in Hollywood appeared in Top Secret! (1984) and Real Genius (1985). The following year, in 1986, his life would change forever as he was cast as Lieutenant Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun. He would go on to reprise the role in Top Gun: Maverick in 2022.
In 1988 Kilmer played the warrior Madmartigan in the fantasy film Willow. In 1991 he gained acclaim for his portrayal of Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s The Doors.
Just a few years later Kilmer would don the cape and cowl as he portrayed Batman Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever.
