Ryan Murphy’s ‘Ratched’ Won’t Return For Second Season

The nurse has left the building.

In case you forgot, the Ryan Murphy-led Netflix Ratched series–based on the Nurse Ratched character in the 1975 Oscar-winning One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest–ran for one season back in 2020–with the hope of a second season.

This week, that hope has finally been officially dashed: There will be no Season 2 of Ratched, according to a report on Deadline. Check out the social media post by the show’s star–Sarah Paulson–on this page that says it all.

The series started four years ago like a house afire, becoming Netflix’ most-viewed original debut series of the year. As a result, a two-season order for 18 total episodes had been placed. Unfortunately for fans of the show, that promise will not be fulfilled.

Ratched–starring Paulson, Cynthia Nixon, Judy Davis, Sharon Stone and Finn Wittrock–was a prequel series to Cuckoo’s Nest that was set in a California psychiatric hospital in 1947. The series followed a younger Mildred Ratcher as she “infiltrates the mental health care system. Her stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that reveals that true monsters are made–not born.”
