Next ‘Exorcist’ Sequel Loses Director, 2025 Release Date

Maybe the Devil made him do it.

Back in October, David Gordon Green hinted that he may not be available to helm The Exorcist: Deceiver–the second film in the proposed Exorcist sequel trilogy–and now that news has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter.

Green–who directed the most recent The Exorcist: Believer from a screenplay he wrote with Scott Teems, Danny McBride and Peter Sattler–this week said he needs to concentrate on his production of Nutcrackers and Season 4 of HBO’s series The Righteous Gemstones, leaving him no time for the horror feature. As a result, the sequel has lost its April 18, 2025 release date.

Last October, Green had predicted this possibility, saying he enjoys working on comedy series–like The Righteous Gemstones–between horror franchises. “It’s fun to be able to step away, take a deep breath, have a big laugh and then get back to work in the genre,” Green said.

In The Exorcist: Believer, Victor Fielding (Leslie Odom Jr.) is raising his young daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) alone following the death of his wife. But things take a frightening turn when the girl and her friend Katherine (Olivia Marcum) disappear in the nearby woods.

The girls return three days later–not remembering what happened to them and behaving strangely–and that’s when Fielding knows he must find the one person who has been through this before: Chris MacNeil (Ellen Burstyn reprising her iconic role).
