Netflix has given the thumbs up on a new animated Ghostbusters series, according to a report on Variety. The outlet has also learned that Elliott Kalan has boarded the project as writer and executive producer.
This new series is by Sony Pictures Animation, with Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan of Ghost Corps, Inc. onboard as executive producers. Reitman and Kenan recently co-wrote the live-action features Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, with Reitman directing the former and Kenan directing the latter.
This marks the third Ghostbusters animated series. The original cartoon, The Real Ghostbusters consisted of a whopping 140 episodes and ran from 1986-1991. The series was heralded for its dark episodes which included spooky spectres, dream demons and even Chtulhu. In 1997, a new series came along called Extreme Ghostbusters. The series ran for 40 episodes and featured Egon leading a new team of Ghostbusters with Slimer and Janine.
