Don’t Breathe Positioned to End Suicide Squad’s Box Office Run at Number One

by Nick Banks

The late summer, buzz-heavy horror film Don’t Breathe is currently tracking to defeat three week champ Suicide Squad at the box office this weekend.

According to Meriah Doty of the Wrap, Don’t Breathe (the second feature film directed by Fede Alvarez) is tracking at close to 13 million dollars, which should be enough to defeat Suicide Squad in its fourth weekend at the box office.

The film currently sits at 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and a creative advertising campaign targeting the youth market that fuels horror movie box office and the tech industry with a 10-second Snapchat video ad that allows users to access the full 90-second “Don’t Breathe” 360 degree video.

The film is produced by legendary horror director Sam Raimi, who also hired Alvarez to helm his remake of his original Evil Dead film. The film stars Stephen Lang (best known for his roles as Colonel Miles Quaritch in Avatar and Happy Loman in Death of a Salesman) as the seemingly helpless blind “mark”of a group of teenage thieves.  The young criminals are played by Jane Levy (Evil Dead), Dylan Minnette (Let Me In), Daniel Zovatto (It Follows), and newcomer Emma Bercovici.

Don’t Breathe opens nationwide on Thursday night August 25th.
