If you were following the Emmy nominations yesterday you saw that Cooper Koch received his first Emmy nomination this morning for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series. That series, of course, was Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story.
In speaking with Deadline, the actor said that the role was a “dream come true.” Koch would go on to say “I found out about the story when I was auditioning for the Law & Order series and the Lifetime movie back in 2017. Since then, I’ve always had this deep care and passion for the brothers and sort of believing their side of the story.”
Airing on Netflix, Monsters: The Lyle And Erik Menendez Story follows the August 20, 1989 murders of Jose and Kitty Menendez by their sons Lyle and Erik Menendez. Prosecutors allege the brothers acted out of greed to secure their inheritance, while the defense claims they acted in self-defense after years of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. The case becomes a national sensation through a highly publicized trial, with the public divided over whether the brothers were cold-blooded killers or victims.
Koch would go on to say that the nomination is even more meaningful for him because the Menendez brothers are still in the midst of trials. “For the past year, this is still something that’s happening live, and in real-time before our eyes,” he said. “If I, or the show and everybody who worked on the show, has had anything to do to sort of move the needle and impact the real-life events that are happening in front of our eyes, then that just means the world… If I had the ability to change the outcome of someone’s life for the better, there’s nothing better than that.”
