Tom Skerritt, best known for portraying Captain Dallas in Ridley Scott’s 1979 sci-fi horror classic Alien, has died at the age of 93. His family confirmed that the veteran actor passed away on Wednesday, according to a report on The Hollywood Reporter.

“We are heartbroken by his loss,” they said. “While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity and the love he brought into our lives. He cared deeply about imagination, creativity, storytelling, service, veterans, the natural world and helping others find and share their own voices.”

Following Alien, Skerritt continued to build an impressive career, landing the role of Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf in the 1986 action film Top Gun. His extensive filmography also included Contact, SpaceCamp, Poltergeist III, Steel Magnolias, The Dead Zone, Maid to Order, Poison Ivy, The Rookie, A River Runs Through It, Tears of the Sun, and Ted.
