The Bride–a new horror pic that draws on the 1935 classic Bride of Frankenstein–has taken giant steps forward this week–adding cast members and securing a distributor and production start date, according to a report on Deadline.

Warner Bros. has picked up the Maggie Gyllenhaal-helmed film that’s expected to start shooting in New York March 4. No release window has yet been announced.

Award-winning actor Annette Bening (Death on the Nile) and Oscar winner Penelope Cruz (Ferrari)–as Myrna, the Bride–have now joined the all-star cast that already includes Christian Bale as Frankenstein, Peter Sarsgaard as a detective and Jessie Buckley in an undisclosed role.

In the film–set in 1930s Chicago–a lonely Frankenstein seeks the aid of Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The pair “invigorate a murdered young woman–and the Bride is born. But, she is beyond what either of them intended–igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a radical social movement.”

The original Bride of Frankenstein–directed by James Whale from a screenplay by William Hurlbut–is, of course, the sequel to 1931’s iconic Frankenstein, and is considered by many to be superior to the original horror film.
