Smiling through the tears.
A sequel to Smile–the Paramount Pictures 2022 horror hit–is slated for theaters this Halloween season, but one original cast member will likely not be part of the project. At least not yet.
Kal Penn–who played Dr. Desai in the first film–recently told Screen Rant, “As far as I know, I’m not in the sequel. But I would obviously say yes if they called. That was a blast, that movie.”
The actor added that he thought the script was “awesome. And I like horror. And then, the way it kind of blew up. We didn’t even think it was gonna go theatrical, and then it did. So, I’m excited for the second one–as a fan.”
As for the rest of the cast, Kyle Gallner–who played Joel in the original–will reprise that role, and join Rosemarie DeWitt, Naomi Scott and Lukas Gage in the sequel. In addition, Parker Finn will return as writer/director and Temple Hill is back as producer.
The sequel–expected to hit the big screen Oct. 18–has not yet revealed details on storyline or production schedules.
The original Smile follows Dr. Rose Cotter (Sosie Bacon) as she suffers through horrifying experiences she can’t explain after witnessing “a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient.” Cotter then comes face-to-face with “her troubling past in order to survive and escape from her frightening new reality.”
