Maika Monroe Discusses ‘Victorian Psycho’

by Rob Caprilozzi

Although Maika Monroe has become one of modern horror’s most recognizable faces – from her breakout role in It Follows to the recent hit Longlegs, the actress told THR that nothing in her growing scream-queen resume fully prepared her for the brutal and blood-soaked experience of Victorian Psycho.

“It terrified me. I knew that it would be the hardest role that I have ever done — and so incredibly different from anything I’ve ever done,” said Monroe. “There’s always a little part of me in roles that I do, something that I can ground it with or connect it with within my own personal life — but this role was really a departure from that. It was working from the ground up, creating this character where I couldn’t rely on my own self. It really, in the most magical way, took a toll on me. I felt it every day.”

The film adapts the 2025 best-selling book by Virginia Feito, who also penned the script.

The synopsis of the film reads “Set in 1858, the story centers on a governess named Winifred Notty (Monroe) who hides her psychopathic tendencies while arriving to work at a remote gothic manor. But as the woman takes care of her charges, staff members begin to inexplicably disappear, and the owners of the estate begin to wonder, too late mind you, if their new governess is serving up a spoonful of sugar with a little arsenic on the side.”
