‘Godzilla Minus One’ Wins Academy Award

And the giant lizard emerges triumphant.

Last night at the 2024 Academy Awards Godzilla Minus One took home the Academy Award for best visual effects,  beating out Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Napoleon, The Creator, and Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. The win marks the first time that a Godzilla film has won an Academy Award.

The award was collected in style as the director of the film, Takashi Yamazaki, along with visual effects artists Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi and Tatsuji Nojima arrived with Godzilla figures in hand as well as Godzilla talons on their dress shoes and heels.

According to the Los Angeles Times, between a quarter and a third of the film’s budget was spent on visual effects.  Obviously that can be considered money that was well spent. A total of 35 artists spent eight months working on the amazing visual effects.

The film became the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in the US.
