After years of development and uncertainty, World War Z is finally showing signs of life again. Paramount appears to be moving full steam ahead with the long-awaited follow-up to the 2013 zombie blockbuster, having secured Brad Pitt’s return and brought acclaimed filmmaker Edward Berger on board to direct the sequel, according to a report on Deadline.
Released in 2013, World War Z brought Max Brooks’ acclaimed post-apocalyptic novel to the big screen. The film was inspired by Brooks’ 2006 bestseller, World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, which chronicles the global devastation of a zombie outbreak through a collection of firsthand accounts.
The official synopsis of the first film read “When former U.N. investigator Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt) and his family get stuck in urban gridlock, he senses that it’s no ordinary traffic jam. His suspicions are confirmed when, suddenly, the city erupts into chaos. A lethal virus, spread through a single bite, is turning healthy people into something vicious, unthinking, and feral. As the pandemic threatens to consume humanity, Gerry leads a worldwide search to find the source of the infection and, with luck, a way to halt its spread.”
Directed by Marc Forster, World War Z starred Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, and Peter Capaldi. The film was released on June 21, 2013 and earned $540 million against an approximate budget of $250 million.
