Black-And-White Godzilla Pic Lights Up Domestic Box Office

Who needs color?

Godzilla: Minus One–the latest kaiju blockbuster from Toho International–was re-released this weekend as a special black-and-white feature, and stateside moviegoers embraced the new version, according to a report on Deadline.

The new-look Godzilla: Minus One/Minus Color finished a respectable 10th in this weekend’s domestic box office race, earning $2.5 million from 2,000 theaters–boosting its stateside total to $55 million, and adding to its $100-plus-million take worldwide. The film is now the highest-grossing Godzilla entry from Japan.

The black-and-white version–according to writer/director Takashi Yamazaki–brings “a new and visceral experience to audiences. It has a realistic, documentary-like feel that’s scarier than color.”

Godzilla: Minus One–set near the end of World War II–finds a devastated Japan “terrorized by a massive reptilian monster that rises from the sea (that would be Godzilla)–breathing radiation.”

In response to this monstrous threat, kamikaze pilot Koichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) and a group of military commanders “go rogue to try to destroy the intruder.”
