Is the monster in our heads?

American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis will make his directorial debut with the upcoming horror feature Relapse, according to a report in Variety. There’s no word at this early stage about production schedules or a release window.

The film–helmed by Ellis from his own screenplay–will star Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things, A Quiet Place: Day One)–and will be produced by Paris-based SND, Adrian Guerra’s Nostromo and SImon Wallon’s Kiss & Kill.

In Relapse, Quinn plays Matt Cullen, who checks into rehab after witnessing a horrific death during a drugged-up party. Three months later, “fueled by his unstable personality and the influence of social media, Cullen’s paranoia grows and interferes with his rehab.”

And, as he starts using drugs again, “a mysterious presence starts to grow around Cullen–and a monster that has been haunting him since he was a teenager reveals itself. But his therapist is convinced the monster is actually in Cullen’s head.”

Eliis–who grew up watching the iconic horror flicks of the 1970s–said “it seems appropriate that my first feature would be a horror film.”
