2024 Horror Comic Awards: Series of the Year is ‘The Deviant’

by Rob Caprilozzi

Nothing quite says Christmas like an axe-wielding Santa.

With the holiday having just passed, it’s the perfect time to announce that The Deviant from Image Comics has won the 2024 Horror Comic Award for Series of the Year.

The official synopsis of the series reads “As snow falls over Milwaukee in 1972, a blood-stained Santa Claus commits unimaginable atrocities against young men. Fifty years later, a troubled young writer interviews this so-called “Deviant Killer,” who still maintains his innocence from behind bars. And as Christmas approaches once again, the past returns, wielding a sharpened ax.”

The combination of Tynion’s tense storytelling and Hixson’s haunting visuals create an immersive experience that lingers long after the last page is turned. The meticulous flashbacks to 1973 add layers to the story, providing context and depth while enhancing the overall sense of dread. Hixson’s unflinching depiction of violence is unsettling, yet it effectively underscores the stakes involved and the true nature of the threat lurking within the story.

The series, which launched on November 15, 2023, is set to wrap up with the release of issue #9 on February 26, 2025.

Congratulations to James Tynion IV, Joshua Hixon, and Image Comics on winning the 2024 Horror Comic Award for Series of the Year.
