Jack Kamen

Jack Kamen’s contributions to the world of illustration and comic art have left a lasting impact, particularly in the realms of horror and suspense. Born in Brooklyn on May 29, 1920, Kamen’s journey began with a foundation in sculpture, studying under notable artists and honing his skills in various artistic disciplines. His early career saw him working as an assistant to a sculptor for the Texas Centennial, and he later took on roles that allowed him to support his education while cultivating his artistic talent.

Kamen’s entry into the comic book industry came after his service in World War II, where he quickly made a name for himself through his work with Fiction House and the Eisner & Iger studio. His distinctive style became synonymous with the crime, horror, humor, and science fiction genres, particularly through his illustrations for EC Comics. Kamen’s ability to evoke emotion and suspense through his artwork resonated with readers, making his contributions unforgettable.

In addition to his comic work, Kamen was also involved in advertising, showcasing his versatility as an illustrator. His artistic prowess extended beyond print, as seen in his contributions to the 1982 horror anthology film Creepshow, where his on-screen artwork further solidified his legacy in the horror genre.

For his remarkable achievements and the indelible mark he has left on horror comics and illustration, Jack Kamen is being recognized as the Horror News Network Horror Comic Award Honoree for 2024.
